One meal estimate has limits
A meal outside the 50–65% range does not show whether the entire day was outside it.
The target applies to total daily energy. A noodle-based lunch may account for a large share of that meal, while breakfast and dinner change the daily proportion. A photo-based estimate also depends on correctly identifying the food and portion.
Rice, bread, noodles, potatoes, and fruit contain carbohydrates, but they do not provide identical fiber or accompanying nutrients. A total carbohydrate estimate is not a reason to reduce every food in the same way.
Review several days
Before cutting carbohydrates, count how often a staple appeared without a main dish or side.
Place three days of meals side by side. Count meals that consisted mainly of rice, bread, or noodles, then count meals that also included a main dish or vegetable side. This review tests whether a combination repeats instead of grading one meal.
People who need an individual target for diabetes, kidney disease, or another condition should not use this population range as a treatment target without guidance from a clinician or registered dietitian.

Record “staple only,” “main included,” and “side included” beside the carbohydrate estimate.
After three days, look for a repeated meal combination rather than the single highest estimate.
