Does eating with a screen make another bite more likely later?

A meta-analysis of 50 adult studies found different results for energy intake during a distracted meal and intake at the next eating occasion.

The 2026 review included television, phone use, gaming, walking, and other distracting tasks. Forty studies measured intake during the meal; 10 measured intake at a later eating occasion. Across all studies, the increase during the distracted meal was not statistically clear. Intake at the later eating occasion was higher.

The result changed depending on when researchers measured energy intake.

One experiment found more later snacking after eating while walking.

Sixty women ate a cereal bar while walking, watching television or talking. Later snack intake was highest in the walking condition.

The review does not show that every person who checks a phone will overeat.

The studies used different distractions, foods, and intervals before the later measurement. Passive distractions such as television were the subgroup associated with higher intake during the meal; physically or cognitively demanding distractions did not show a clear increase.

To observe your own pattern, compare three meals with a screen and three without one. After each meal, record what you remember eating and when you next feel hungry. This small comparison is an observation, not a diagnosis.
