Does eating slowly change how much we eat?

Across 22 experiments that changed eating rate, participants in slower conditions consumed less energy during the meal than participants in faster conditions. The experiments did not show that slower eating guarantees greater fullness or long-term weight loss.

A 2014 systematic review combined 22 studies in which researchers experimentally changed eating rate and measured energy intake during the meal, subjective hunger, or both. The researchers used different methods, including verbal instructions, harder food textures, and computer-timed prompts.

Researchers found no clear difference in subjective hunger after the meal.

The review found no statistically significant relationship between eating rate and the hunger participants reported immediately after the meal or up to 3.5 hours later. Lower intake in the slower condition does not mean that slower eating guarantees fullness.

This distinction makes eating rate useful as one condition that may shape intake during a meal, not as a method that reliably removes hunger.

Short laboratory meals do not show that eating slowly produces long-term weight loss.

The 22 studies used different ways to slow eating, and their results varied substantially. Most measured what participants consumed in a single experimental meal. The review did not establish whether the difference persists during ordinary workdays or changes body weight over time.

To test whether a slower pace is practical for you, compare the same type of lunch twice. Eat normally once. The next time, put down your utensil every few bites. Record the meal duration, satisfaction afterward, and what made you hurry. That small comparison can tell you whether the change is useful without turning every meal into a test.

Before counting chews, compare how time and satisfaction change when you create more space between bites.
