On the later schedule, participants reported greater waking hunger and had lower levels of leptin, a hormone involved in satiety. Waking energy expenditure was also lower.
That does not mean dinner at 10 pm automatically causes weight gain. The study shows that, under tightly controlled conditions, timing alone may alter short-term responses.

A short trial of 16 people is not a universal rule.
The participants were 16 adults with overweight or obesity, studied under highly controlled conditions. The result cannot simply be applied to every age, work schedule, health condition or daily routine.
It is not a reason to shame people whose meals run late because of shifts, caregiving or life. A calmer first step is to notice how timing and hunger move together for you.
