What changes when the same meals move four hours later?

In a 2022 controlled trial, 16 adults ate the same three meals on an early schedule and a schedule shifted about four hours later. On the later schedule, participants reported greater waking hunger and had lower waking energy expenditure. The trial did not measure long-term weight change.

Researchers enrolled 16 adults with overweight or obesity in two nine-day protocols. They controlled nutrient intake, physical activity, sleep, and light exposure. During the later protocol, researchers moved all three meals about four hours later. Every participant completed both schedules.

Participants reported greater hunger and had lower waking energy expenditure on the later schedule.

Researchers also found changes in the ratio of ghrelin to leptin, two hormones involved in appetite regulation, and a decrease in 24-hour core body temperature.

These were short-term responses under controlled conditions. The findings do not show that eating at one clock time automatically causes weight gain.

The study cannot tell every reader what time dinner should be.

The participants were 16 adults with overweight or obesity living under tightly controlled study conditions. The trial did not test every age, work schedule, health condition, or routine, and it did not measure weight change over months.

To examine your own pattern, record dinner time, hunger before dinner, and bedtime for one week. Check whether stronger hunger occurs only on later dinner days or also follows an early lunch or short sleep. That comparison helps avoid treating clock time as the only cause.
