On a short night, how much is appetite about willpower?

When we try to improve food habits, we often begin with calories or ingredients. But appetite may have started the night before.

A trial enrolled 80 adults with overweight who habitually slept less than 6.5 hours. Half received a personalized sleep-extension session; half continued their usual sleep. No diet or exercise plan was prescribed.

The group that slept about 1.2 hours longer consumed roughly 270 fewer kcal per day relative to control.

Appetite does not need to be judged in isolation.

Sleep relates to hunger, waking hours and opportunities to eat through several pathways. This trial suggests that changing sleep can move intake even without direct dietary instruction.

“I had a late snack” can look different when you also remember that the night before was short.

The 270 kcal figure is not a promise for everyone.

The study lasted two weeks and involved adults with overweight who already slept too little. It does not establish the same long-term weight change for every age, body or sleep pattern.

Sleep is better treated as part of the meal’s context, not as a new diet.

Before blaming what you ate, remember how much you slept.
