Reading a sleep-extension trial

Does extending sleep change energy intake?

Researchers randomized 80 adults aged 21–40 with overweight and habitual sleep under 6.5 hours to personalized sleep-extension advice or continued habitual sleep.

The sleep-extension group received counseling intended to extend time in bed to 8.5 hours; the control group continued its usual schedule. Both groups lived at home and received no prescribed diet or exercise plan.

Sleep increased by about 1.2 hours, and the change in energy intake was 270 kcal/day lower in the sleep-extension group than in control.

The figure is a difference between changes in two groups, not the amount every participant ate less.

From baseline, estimated energy intake fell by 155.5 kcal/day in the sleep-extension group and rose by 114.9 kcal/day in control. The difference between those changes was 270.4 kcal/day. Researchers estimated intake from doubly labeled water measurements of expenditure plus changes in body energy stores.

The trial did not test long-term weight loss or people who already slept longer.

The single-center US trial enrolled adults aged 21–40 with overweight and habitual short sleep. The intervention lasted two weeks. It does not show that every person will reduce intake by 270 kcal/day after extending sleep.

For one week, place sleep duration beside snack times and check whether the same pattern repeats after shorter nights.
